چکیده
OBJECTIVE To show the institutional experience of closure of interatrial communications with a modified umbrella device. DESIGN Descriptive study of all patients in whom transcatheter umbrella closure of interatrial communications has been attempted. SETTING A tertiary referral centre. PATIENTS 16 patients with 17 interatrial communications of various types. INTERVENTIONS Transcatheter placement of a modified Rashkind umbrella occluder. RESULTS Two procedural failures due to venous access problems. Two placement failures needing early surgical repair. 13 successful placements in 12 patients. CONCLUSIONS The modified Rashkind umbrella can successfully be used to close both iatrogenic and naturally occurring interatrial communications, particularly those present after the Fontan procedure.

متن کاملPercutaneous closure of interatrial communications in adults – prospective embolism prevention study with two- and three-dimensional echocardiography
BACKGROUND Patients with interatrial communications after paradoxical embolic events are at risk for recurrent thromboembolism. We hypothesized that transcatheter closure of the defects would result in long-term prevention of systemic embolism and performed clinical and echocardiographic follow-up. METHODS We included 161 patients (mean age 46.8 +/- 11 years, 83 females) with patent foramen o...

OBJECTIVE To report initial experiences with transcatheter occlusion of atrial septal defects using a new occlusion device. SUBJECTS 10 children aged 1.1 to 14.9 years. INCLUSION CRITERIA Patients with a body weight above 10 kg, normal pulmonary resistance and an indication for surgical closure of a secundum atrial septal defect, a residual tissue rim of interatrial septum surrounding the d...
متن کاملTHERAPY AND PREVENTION CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE Transcatheter umbrella closure of congenital heart defects
Between October 1984 and September 1986, we attempted transcatheter umbrella closure, using the Rashkind PDA occluder, of 12 congenital or postoperative cardiovascular defects (other than patent ductus arteriosus [PDA]) in 11 patients. In each, we used the umbrella for closure because the defect was too short and/or too large to close with conventional transcatheter methods. The defects include...
